When you think you’ve lost important data, pictures or other information on your Apple Mac, the first thing to do is to check the Trash Folder for the deleted file(s). You can check the trash in 2 different places. The first is the trash can icon in your programs bar at the bottom of your screen.

The second is the private, hidden directory in Mac OS X located in each user’s Home folder. The path to the folder is ~/.Trash. If you have other hard drives, USB memory sticks, or other memory cards attached to the system, those devices also contain an invisible directory called .Trashes, which in turn contains a hidden Trash folder for each user.

If you’ve emptied the Trash, the file is deleted but the remnants of the file are not overwritten immediately. The space occupied by deleted files is considered free hard drive space by OS X. If you can get to the recovery process soon, this helps avoid the file remnants being overwritten and lost forever.

OS X has on option called Empty Trash Securely. If that was enabled your chances of recovering your data decrease. Even though many people stick with the default of not emptying Trash securely for performance reasons, OS X still enables Empty Trash Securely option for a small minority of people. Data deleted from the trash on systems with this option enabled is overwritten multiple times to help ensure recovery is not possible for security reasons.

After checking the locations mentioned above for the trash, you’ll want to minimize your usage of the hard drive with the deleted file. Especially write operations. If possible, right after the file has been deleted, don’t use your Mac. The more times the system is used, the less likely any data recovery will be possible.
